Vegetation fixation?!

Written by Renee on April 10, 2009 – 6:30 pm -

Things are gittin’ bizzay ’round here with the book nearing completion… SO TAKE A LOOK AT THESE OLD COLLEGE THINGS!

I made this faux street sign in 2D design my freshman year of college. We were assigned to make a road sign of whatever… so yeah. “Caution: Fighting Vegetables!” Carrot vs. Eggplant! A fight to the death!

I think this was just acrylic and india ink on illustration board (everything we made in that class was on illustration board…). I still like it. It’s kind of nutty.

I made this here puppy in 3d Design. The assignment was to make a mask of whatever we wanted. So yeah I uh, chose to make a uh, pilgrim-hatted watermelon slice that looks slightly surprised? I constructed mine out of armature wire, wire mesh, paper mache, and joint compound. I then primed it with gesso and painted it with acrylics. I never knew that paper mache was so ridiculously rigid and a sucky bitch to sand before this project…

I ended up giving this to a friend because I didn’t know what to do with it and I think he ended up dropping it and cracking it. Wherever it is now, I do not know.

So, YES, I have a thing for anthropomorphic vegetation?! Or just anthropomorphic food in general?! So WHAT if I might wear an anthropomorphic food costume on appropriate occasions if I had one?! DEAL WITH IT!

Yorkshire Terror!

Written by Renee on March 27, 2009 – 6:30 pm -

Some more ol’ college art for today!

I did this drawing for the “creative project” requirement in a beatnik literature class I took in my last year of college. It sounds like it would be a fun class, but I really hated it. A lot of times there would just be a lot of really pretentious discussion about what “hip” is, which annoys me to no end… or the teacher would just make up weak excuses to justify the Beat writers anytime they went against one of their self-proclaimed Beat ideals. The highlight of the class was near the end when one frustrated student threw a copy of The Western Lands onto the ground in the middle of the room screaming out something like, “I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND!” But anyway…

The drawing is an adaptation of an excerpt from William S. Burrough’s The Western Lands. There’s a passage (which unfortunately I didn’t write down) about a coked up celeb throwing his girlfriend’s Yorkshire terrier into a tank of piranhas. The girl then grabs one of those stand-up lobby ashtrays to break to aquarium glass, releasing the piranhas and the mauled remains of her pup. I pretty much picked that passage just because it would be funny to illustrate… I only did pencils for the class since I had to draw the picture the night before it was due and didn’t have time to ink it. To make up for it though, I penciled it really tightly indicating how I would have liked to ink it.

I later got the chance to ink this picture for an inking class. It failed to please the teacher because I wasn’t really pushing textures or experimental techniques… but oh well. I got what I wanted out of it: a tightly inked version of a drawing I wanted to ink!

The title of the piece, “Yorkshire Terror!,” is of course a pun on the type of dog that gets killed. Yep yep… ¬_¬ You can see part of the inked version of this picture in the banner for this blog.

Drawing I stoof

Written by Renee on March 13, 2009 – 6:30 pm -

One of my first classes at SCAD was Drawing I. We did learn some general stuff about drawing, but mostly we ended up doing this portrait sort of stuff with the face. The teacher was pretty crazy, but luckily I didn’t have to suffer from her insanity much since she generally left me to do my own thing because I wasn’t struggling with the material. Despite her insanity though, there was hilarious fun to be had (a lot of it probably because she was so crazy that it lead to hilarity). Here’s a few of the face studies I did:

These were all done about 18″x24″ in charcoal on newsprint. I don’t really have anything against charcoal other than how messy it is and I’m pretty sure we were stressing the “cross-contour” on these assignments.

The eye drawing is kind of intense and semi-freaks me out.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at this ol’ college stuff, and check back on Monday for some new Festering Romance art!

I like subtractive graphite drawings…

Written by Renee on February 27, 2009 – 4:30 pm -

Oh my god, what, college drawings this time instead of high school?!?! Here’s a few still lifes I did for Drawing II in college using the subtractive graphite method (cover the entire paper in graphite, and then erase for lighter areas, add some more graphite for darker areas…).

I… I still like subtractive graphite drawing! And still lifes! They’re fun…
