Holla-holla-ween, y’all.

Oh, Halloween. You are a holiday for eating candy… causing mischief… decorating my blog with horrible pics like the one above. Oh, Halloween.

And in the spirit of Halloween atrocities:

*SHHHRRRIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKK!*

Why, god? Why?

Me oh my, my day to day life. I feel like I’m becoming a strange old lady already. Reading trashy books checked out from the library (Sookie Stackhouse novels), watching gimmicky lady tv on Lifetime (Project Runway), gushing over my cat, thinking about fiber intake, chatting about steel hips and liver spots, etc… Life could be worse.

Thanks for stopping by today, and check back on Monday for a new blog post!

Give it up!

Written by Renee on October 26, 2009 – 6:58 pm -

Thanks to everyone who came out for the SCAD Zine and Record Fair this year! While it was a pretty small con, a decent number of people showed up and business was A-OK. I hope everyone who bought something from our table enjoys their new stuff! I hope to attend some more conventions in the coming year, so look out for some new appearances to be announced on this site!

In other news, I recently got a copy of Gardening Mama. I enjoy the Cooking Mama franchise, so I thought I’d give this new puppy a try (although a new Cooking Mama has just come out too!), and it’s pretty good stuff! It’s a little harder than the older Cooking Mamas… But Mama speaks in EVEN MORE mangled English MORE FREQUENTLY, so it’s all good. I will defeat you, Gardening Mama…!

Getting my new Gardening Mama in the mail made me feel a bit better about Amazon just SCREWING UP my recent order. They sent me the wrong thing, and they don’t have anything to replace it with, so 1.5 months of waiting down the drain… And now I have to go to the post office to return their piece of crap. ARGH, oh Amazon, how I love you then I hate you.

Well, at any rate, enjoy my Gardening Mama fanart if you will. I think I’ll go watch the new Venture Bros ep now.

Thanks for checking in today, and check back Friday for a new post!

Reviews? Venture Bros?

Written by Renee on October 23, 2009 – 8:30 pm -

As time goes by, a few more reviews trickle out for Festering Romance, and the more I read the reviews, the more I just see how mixed the reception has been for the book. There’s been reviewers that have loved the book completely, and then there’s reviewers who have hated the book desperately. Not really a big surprise, though; I always knew it would be a book that’s not for everyone. In the end, it really is just a quiet story about two damaged people trying to get their lives in order. (Visit the Press page of FesteringRomance.com for review links!)

A recent generally positive review (in my opinion) from ReadAboutComics mentions that the reviewer feels that the book seems more like a movie pitch than a graphic novel. Ouch — a cutting remark in this recent state of the industry where many people will enter into comics purely to create material to help pitch their movie, garnering lots of groans from industry professionals. It’s funny that the reviewer goes on to say that the book would have “hit” potential if made into a movie and offers many other positive remarks after such a shockingly negative-seeming first line.

I just felt that I should note, mostly for my own edification, that the book was never meant for screen. I do believe it would be possible to translate the book for screen, but it would have to be HEAVILY adapted. And if a movie WAS made and then a comic adaptation of the movie was made, I don’t think it would be much like Festering Romance at all. I know some other people have gotten the idea that the pitch for Festering Romance was made while I was in FILM school even though I never said I went to film school nor have I taken film courses. I actually got my BFA in Sequential Art at the Savannah College of Art & Design. So there you go, just for the record.

Other than that, I feel like the reviewer brings up a lot of interesting points, some of which I agree with, some I don’t. It really is a rather mixed review. But I am glad to read a review now that goes more in depth about how they like the artwork.

In other news, I saw the first episode of the new Venture Brothers season a few days ago. I’m not too sure what to think about the new season yet; I wasn’t really blown away as much by the first episode as I was by the second and third seasons’ first eps. I think it’ll take a few more episodes before I really know how to feel about this season. It definitely seems like a lot’s going to change (well, a lot has already changed in that first episode), and I look forward to seeing where the show has to go this time.

Well, thanks for checking in today! Come by and see me tomorrow at the SCAD Zine and Record Fair if you’re in the Savannah area! Otherwise, check back Monday for a new post!

SCAD Zine & Record Fair 2009

Written by Renee on October 16, 2009 – 5:31 pm -

For anyone in the Savannah area, SCAD is holding a Zine & Record Fair next Saturday, October 24 in Oglethorpe House ballroom from 10am-6pm. Kyle, Amanda, and I will there there with our wares, peddling away. If you missed getting anything from us at SPX this year, stop by and fill out your collections! I’ll have copies of Festering Romance and mini-comics, and Kyle will be reprinting some of his sold-out minis. If you’re interested in original art, please let me know because otherwise I won’t be bringing my portfolios. If you’re stopping by Comics Art Forum on Saturday, the Fair continues until 6pm, so stop by after your workshop!

There’s more info about the Fair on the right sidebar. Maybe I’ll see you there!

Thanks for checking in today, and check back Monday for a new blog post!
