Yorkshire Terror!

Written by Renee on March 27, 2009 – 6:30 pm -

Some more ol’ college art for today!

I did this drawing for the “creative project” requirement in a beatnik literature class I took in my last year of college. It sounds like it would be a fun class, but I really hated it. A lot of times there would just be a lot of really pretentious discussion about what “hip” is, which annoys me to no end… or the teacher would just make up weak excuses to justify the Beat writers anytime they went against one of their self-proclaimed Beat ideals. The highlight of the class was near the end when one frustrated student threw a copy of The Western Lands onto the ground in the middle of the room screaming out something like, “I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND!” But anyway…

The drawing is an adaptation of an excerpt from William S. Burrough’s The Western Lands. There’s a passage (which unfortunately I didn’t write down) about a coked up celeb throwing his girlfriend’s Yorkshire terrier into a tank of piranhas. The girl then grabs one of those stand-up lobby ashtrays to break to aquarium glass, releasing the piranhas and the mauled remains of her pup. I pretty much picked that passage just because it would be funny to illustrate… I only did pencils for the class since I had to draw the picture the night before it was due and didn’t have time to ink it. To make up for it though, I penciled it really tightly indicating how I would have liked to ink it.

I later got the chance to ink this picture for an inking class. It failed to please the teacher because I wasn’t really pushing textures or experimental techniques… but oh well. I got what I wanted out of it: a tightly inked version of a drawing I wanted to ink!

The title of the piece, “Yorkshire Terror!,” is of course a pun on the type of dog that gets killed. Yep yep… ¬_¬ You can see part of the inked version of this picture in the banner for this blog.

Everything looks a lot nicer with the spot blacks…! My pages look like suck sketchy drafts until everything’s filled in… I really look forward to when the tones are all added.

Triple kicks

Written by Renee on March 20, 2009 – 6:30 pm -

Back in high school for some reason I repeatedly drew pictures of people kicking at the viewer. The perspective wasn’t always right, but it was always fun to draw. Here’s a few in order from oldest to newest:
