I like subtractive graphite drawings…
Written by Renee on February 27, 2009 – 4:30 pm -

Oh my god, what, college drawings this time instead of high school?!?! Here’s a few still lifes I did for Drawing II in college using the subtractive graphite method (cover the entire paper in graphite, and then erase for lighter areas, add some more graphite for darker areas…).
I… I still like subtractive graphite drawing! And still lifes! They’re fun…

Ohtori movie poster
Written by Renee on February 20, 2009 – 6:30 pm -I took a class called Computer Art during my senior year in high school where basically all we did was learn little things about Adobe programs and screwed around with the huge computer tablets in the lab. It was pretty fun and not really that complicated a class. For one of our assignments, we had to make a movie poster, so I got permission to make a parody poster:

My idea was basically to combine ideas from the Utena anime and Rushmore to spoof the Rushmore movie poster. I thought the two movies had interesting parallels — the elite academy, fighting over a woman, an “out-there” sort of freespirited “revolutionary” — so I thought it would be a pretty fun idea.
The date on the bottom of the image says that it was finished in 2002 (my senior year), but I had drawn the artwork for the poster earlier than that and prepared some other parts of the image previously. An old friend of mine had even helped make the logo (I don’t really understand the perspective warper thing in Photoshop…). Getting the class assignment was a good excuse for me to actually finish this old personal project of mine. I’m pretty pleased with the results, but I do see some flubs here and there. I think if you’re familiar with both Utena and Rushmore you might get a kick out of this, so here ya go.

Festering Romance page 35 pencils
Written by Renee on February 16, 2009 – 6:30 pm -Today, I have an earlier page from Festering Romance to show — the pencils for page 35:

Generally, after I finished a scene in the book, I got really tired of drawing the setting and would look really forward to drawing something different… which is why it was good that most settings only showed up once. The only places that really get visited over and over are the characters’ apartments. But, for instance, after drawing this trolley tour scene, I was done with drawing trolleys. Same thing for drawing the ouija board over and over, the pizza place, classroom desks, etc. Montage scenes were nice because every panel would be in a different setting, but that was challenging in another way. But now I have to ink all those scenes… so… yeah.
Another thing I remember when looking back at the pages now is how much research I did for the simplest of things that seem hardly noticeable now… But I suppose that should be the desired effect sort of? I took so many photos of River Street for this scene (a big tourist spot)… I hate visiting the place otherwise.
Well, thanks for looking, and check back on Friday for more high school art!

The Jalapeno Bread Tragedy
Written by Renee on February 13, 2009 – 6:30 pm -Hey, yo! Since things are probably going to be pretty busy for the next few months, you’ll probably be seeing more and more high school art for my blog posts since it’s so dang easy to post the stuff! For today, a high school comic!

Marvel at the puking! Be shocked by the stick figures! Stand amazed at my brazen multiple misspellings of “jalapeno”!
I drew this with a Sharpie in the lunch room one day during high school after I had tasted a piece of my friend’s jalapeno bread. He kept going on and on about how great it was… But indeed, how great it was not. Right after tasting it I went over to the trash can and spit it out. Yuck yuck. Obviously, a lot of planning didn’t go into this comic, but it does indeed portray the honest emotions of my tragic youth. You’re getting some real insight into my psyche with this one.
Well, thanks for looking, and check back on Monday for more Festering Romance art!
